Creativity and interactivity: Westwind Design Group prints whole environments

Calgary's Westwind Design Group uses its museum background and a Roland TrueVIS to create immersive environments.

Westwind Design Group's background in museums puts the Calgary, Alberta business in good stead. It goes beyond simple prints: it creates cohesive 'environments' featuring interior and wayfinding signage, retail displays, wall, window and floor graphics, kiosks, vehicle wraps and even custom apps.

Working mainly with museums and interpretative centres to design, produce and install graphics, Westwind recently installed a Roland TrueVIS VG-540 large-format inkjet printer/cutter.

Bringing digital print production in-house has given the team of nine employees improved control over the quality of its incredible output and its turnaround, as Ryan Pearse, graphic designer for Westwind Design Group, explains.

"The VG is fast, reliable and easy to use," he says. "Having these capabilities available to us 24/7 has been great."

Its clients include housebuilder Brookfield Residential, for whom Westwind designed a 254mm x 381mm pop-up stand with a custom digital app, signage, interactive digital displays and complete wall and floor graphics, printed on the TrueVIS VG-540.

"We tried to create a space that was inclusive, fun and attracted people," says Ryan. "We hit our client's three-month traffic target for the project in three weeks, and they were extremely happy."

The TrueVIS printer/cutter has also given the designers courage to jump into new projects. Westwind's very first vehicle wrap job with the new Roland VG-540 was to wrap a trailer for the Canadian city's famous Calgary Stampede, a huge rodeo event attended by hundreds of thousands of people.

What does Ryan love most about his job? "The creativity," he says. "The capabilities of our Roland make so many of our creative solutions possible."

If you need creative versatility, you need the Roland TrueVIS VG Series: able to print and cut signs, banners, wraps, decals, fine art, transfers and a whole lot more in a single device.
