Pantone chooses warmth and energy of Living Coral as Color of the Year 2019

Pantone recently revealed its Color of the Year 2019, Living Coral (16-1546). Bright and vibrant yet inspired by delicate nature, this shade is set to be everywhere in 2019.

The Pantone Color Institute has selected one stand-out hue each year for two decades, chosen for its emergence across myriad sectors – fashion, home furnishings, packaging and more – while, in turn, influencing trends in the coming year. It's therefore essential for businesses working with any kind of design to take notice of Pantone's annual pick.

And for 2019 it's hard to ignore: bold Living Coral is described by Pantone as 'an animating and life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone'; a 'vibrant yet mellow' colour that 'embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment'. Like 2017's Color of the Year Greenery, flamingo-pink Living Coral is part of the ongoing trend for tropical colours and prints, reflecting an appreciation of the natural world as explored via social media.

"Colour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, and this is particularly true for Living Coral," explains Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. "With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord."

Pantone notes that 'coral reefs are a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life', evoking scenes from Blue Planet II, 2018's groundbreaking BBC series that woke up the world to the effect of humans on our oceans. Pantone's Instagram is full of images all about marine life, the coast and travelling in boldly clashing shades, including 2018's Color of the Year Ultra Violet, 2017's palm-tree Greenery and 2016's sky-blue co-winner Serenity. It also features scenes from Miami Beach, a tropical US city colourfully influenced by its Caribbean neighbours.

Living Coral, despite its initial brightness, is surprisingly easy to co-ordinate with other shades both subtle and loud, and easy to replicate on modern digital printing systems. A quick look at social media will reveal the vivid yet soft pink-orange used in wallpaper, stationery, clothes and accessories, furniture, ceramics, artwork, gift wrapping – all of which are printable, either direct or with heat-transfer – as well as hair, make-up and food. A bolder shade than so-called Millennial Pink, Living Coral is both more grown-up and more fun – an exciting, optimistic colour for 2019.
