Drama and mindfulness: Pantone spreads Ultra Violet rays across 2018

We're seeing Ultra Violet everywhere at the moment (and not just in Roland VERSAUV printers!), on adverts, fashion magazines, interiors blogs and more. Specifically, Ultra Violet, a rich blue-based purple, which has been designated by Pantone as its official Color of the Year for 2018.

Pantone 18-3838 is simultaneously modern and nostalgic, with nods to both the wealthy establishment and groundbreaking individualism – Pantone notes that Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix all played with shades of violet as part of their creative identities – while offering softness and comfort.

Moreover, Pantone has focused on the mystical and mindfulness evocations of Ultra Violet.

"Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now," says the Pantone Color Institute. "The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own."

It's a dramatic shade, but Pantone insists its annual colour pick is more than what happened in the previous twelve months or a frivolous response of current fashions. "The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than 'what's trending' in the world of design; it's truly a reflection of what's needed in our world today," says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

Purple is used as an energising colour during meditation and in other spaces that provide 'a refuge from today's over-stimulated world', says Pantone – who might be recommending we all take a breather in 2018. And, a few months in, a holiday sounds good to us!

For fashion and interior designers, Ultra Violet works perfectly with the velvets, corduroys and the other heavy, rich fabrics that were in vogue in 2017, while also providing a contrasting shade for other graphic designers to play with. Not as strong as black, more sophisticated than grey shades and more fun than dark blues, Pantone 15-0343 is a timeless jewel colour for modern graphics.
