Cutlery the Nordic WayThe Danish Design School, Copenhagen - The Nordic traditions and food philosophy have found their renaissance through Noma, the Copenhagen based and internationally acclaimed restaurant that holds the esteemed title of 'best restaurant in the world in 2010' (Restaurant Magazine). The concept of Noma is to use Nordic ingredients and raw materials in order to give the diners a unique sensation of the Nordics. This concept has inspired design student Mads Jeppe Hansen from the Danish Design School to design cutlery inspired by Noma and the 'Noma' philosophy.
"Through Nordic food culture, we talk about what we eat and how we prepare the food, I've tried to ask the question: how do we eat? ", says Mads about his concept. The basic principle of the cutlery is to bond with the food and increase the experience of dining. Traditional cutlery is wide at the end of the shaft whereas Mads' is wide at the head. This encourages the diner to hold further down the cutlery, closer to the food which yields a new experience of dining. The shape is also intended the small but many dishes varying from liquid to solid form. To some extent, the shape enables the fork to be used as a spoon. The shape originates from the Nordic legacy and the stories about the Vikings. Our Nordic ancestors lived in the nature and close to the water which they conquered with their characteristic Longboat. The design has been developed with the Noma as the main inspiration and with their professional and kind assistance.
